DC WIC Local Agencies are the community-based organizations that provide WIC services such as breastfeeding education and support, nutrition counseling and education, and referrals to other community supports. Positions at our Local Agencies include those for Registered Dietitians (referred to as CPAs), community health nutritionists (referred to as CPPAs),and breastfeeding peer counselors.

Position Overviews

Competent Professional
Authority (CPA)

Education + Background

  • Licensed Registered Dietitian (RDN, LD) or LicensedNutritionist (LN)
  • Bachelors degree (Master's degree preferred)
  • 1 + years experience in maternal and child health (internship experience included)

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assesses nutrition and/or health risks using Value Enhanced Nutrition Assessment (VENA) techniques
  • Provides education and counseling to high-risk participants
  • Develops nutrition care plans for participants and provides individual follow up counseling
  • Provides referrals to other healthcare providers and community supports
  • Supervises work of CPPAs and clerks

Competent Para-Professional
Authority (CPPA)

Education + Background

  • Bachelor's degree in nutrition, community health, or a related field
  • Computer literate
  • Completion of required training with a passing grade on an administered exam

Primary Responsibilities

  • Performs intake and eligibility screening
  • Collects height, weight, and hemoglobin lab measurements
  • Performs initial health assessments using a standardized tool
  • Provides nutrition education and counseling to low-risk participants
  • Leads remote, web-based group nutrition education classes

Nutrition Education
Technician (Clerk)

Education + Background

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Customer service and time management skills
  • Computer literate
  • 1+ Years experience working in a community service type setting preferred

Primary Responsibilities

  • Performs intake and eligibility screening
  • Collects height, weight, and hemoglobin lab measurements
  • Performs administrative duties such as answering phones, sending appointment reminders, issuing food benefits, etc.
  • Assists with secondary nutrition education opportunities for low-risk participants​
