Children's National Hosts Reintroduction of WIC Act Event
September 14, 2018
Children's National Health System hosted an event to support and reintroduce the Wise Investment in Our Children (WIC) Act. The WIC Act, co-sponsored by Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA), would improve maternal and child health outcomes in the U.S. by expanding WIC eligibility for at-risk infants, children and new mothers, helping address nutrition gaps during critical periods of the lifespan. The WIC Act extends child eligibility until kindergarten or age six, permits states to certify infants until age two and prolongs eligibility for breastfeeding and postpartum mothers. The congresswomen visited the Children's National WIC clinic following their announcement. They were able to meet with clinic staff and WIC participants. President and CEO, Kurt Newman, M.D., provided welcome remarks at the event, saying "I believe and Children's National believes that, as a country, we need to find solutions and we need to endorse solutions, and that's what that bill does. We know we need to intervene early, and that's an investment in our children."
